Construction site meal terms: what to check apart from the day rate

Check what meal provision includes without treating it as part of the wage calculation.

Meal provision is a condition, not one number

“Meals provided” may mean lunch only or three meals. It may differ on rest days, night work, or at a lodging site.

Do not assume that a site with lunch has no food cost, or that its rate is always higher or lower. Conditions vary by site and agreement.

Ask specific questions before the first day

Confirm which meals are available, when they are available, whether the site uses a cafeteria, meal tickets or another method, and whether any user cost applies.

Save personal food spending as living cost data, not as a payroll deduction.

  • Lunch or three meals
  • Availability on rest and night-work days
  • Cafeteria, meal ticket or other method
  • Any separate user cost
  • Relation to meeting and finishing time

Review actual spending separately at month end

Monthly review should keep estimated take-home pay, recorded living costs and the amount remaining after living costs as separate figures.

A changed or unclear meal term is worth noting with a date so the next payment discussion starts from clear facts.
